Day 1 – Discovering the Soul of Bari

The best way to begin the journey is by exploring Bari’s historic old town, known as Bari Vecchia, a maze of narrow alleyways full of life, balconies draped with hanging laundry, and small squares where the authentic spirit of southern Italy can still be felt. Wandering through its streets leads to the impressive Basilica of Saint Nicholas, one of the most important churches in the region, home to the relics of Saint Nicholas and a fascinating blend of Romanesque and medieval influences.

Nearby stands the Cathedral of Saint Sabinus, another magnificent example of Apulian Romanesque architecture. Afterwards, it is worth walking to the Castello Svevo, a fortress originally built by the Normans and later expanded by Emperor Frederick II.

One of the most special moments of the day is getting lost in the streets where local women prepare handmade orecchiette pasta outside their homes, especially along the famous Strada delle Orecchiette. It is a truly authentic experience and the perfect opportunity to discover the local culinary traditions.

In the afternoon, Bari’s seafront promenade offers an elegant and relaxed atmosphere. The Lungomare is ideal for a sunset stroll while watching fishermen, seaside cafés, and the Adriatic Sea. For dinner, there is nothing better than tasting traditional dishes such as focaccia barese, fresh seafood pasta, or grilled octopus.

Day 2 – Polignano a Mare and Monopoli

Less than an hour from Bari lies Polignano a Mare, one of the most spectacular towns in southern Italy. Perched on limestone cliffs, it offers breathtaking views over the Adriatic Sea and a historic center filled with panoramic terraces, whitewashed alleyways, and romantic corners.

The famous Lama Monachile beach, nestled between rocky cliffs, is one of the most photographed spots in Puglia. It is also worth exploring the terraces overlooking the sea and discovering the small poems written on doors and walls throughout the old town.

After lunch, the journey can continue to Monopoli, a charming coastal town with a more peaceful and authentic atmosphere. Its fishing harbor, filled with traditional blue boats, is one of the prettiest corners of the region.

The historic center is full of Baroque churches, hidden squares, and restaurants where visitors can enjoy fresh seafood. Monopoli also boasts small coves with crystal-clear waters, perfect for relaxing for a few hours.

Day 3 – Alberobello and the Itria Valley

The third day can be dedicated to exploring the inland part of the region, beginning with Alberobello, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This small town is famous for its trulli, traditional stone houses with conical roofs that look as though they have come straight out of a fairy tale.

Walking through the districts of Rione Monti and Aia Piccola allows visitors to discover dozens of these unique dwellings, many of which have now been transformed into artisan shops, cafés, or charming boutique accommodations.

Afterwards, it is worth driving through the beautiful Itria Valley, one of the most elegant and rural areas of Puglia, surrounded by olive groves, vineyards, and scenic country roads.

Along this route, highlights include towns such as Locorotondo, considered one of the most beautiful villages in Italy thanks to its whitewashed houses and flower-filled balconies, and Martina Franca, renowned for its elegant Baroque architecture and stately squares.

The day is perfect for enjoying a traditional meal at a local masseria, where visitors can taste regional cheeses, fresh burrata, cured meats, and local wines.

Day 4 – Matera, an Unforgettable Excursion

Although it belongs to the region of Basilicata, Matera is an essential excursion from Bari. The city is world-famous for the Sassi, ancient districts carved into the rock that create one of the most breathtaking urban landscapes in Europe.

Walking through Matera feels like stepping back in time: cave houses, rock churches, tunnels, and panoramic viewpoints make every corner a unique experience. The city has served as the setting for numerous films thanks to its biblical and mysterious atmosphere.

Among the most interesting sights are the Cathedral of Matera, the churches carved into stone, and the panoramic terraces overlooking the Sassi at sunset.

It is also highly recommended to visit one of the restored cave houses to better understand how local families once lived.

Day 5 – Relaxing on the Coast or Exploring Sea Caves

The final day can be adapted according to the pace of the trip. For those looking for sea and relaxation, the beaches near Bari offer several very pleasant options.

An excellent alternative is to visit Torre a Mare, a small fishing village perfect for having lunch by the harbor and enjoying a peaceful atmosphere.

Another option is to head towards Giovinazzo, less touristy and home to a beautiful historic center overlooking the sea.

For travelers seeking a more active experience, a boat excursion through the sea caves of Polignano a Mare offers the chance to discover hidden grottoes, crystal-clear waters, and spectacular cliffs from the sea.
